Japanese diplomatic delegation, led by Iwakura Tomomi, presents their documents to President Grant and his cabinet, April 1872. Iwakura Mission of high officials and scholars, was traveling to study the political and social systems of the West. They also sought to renegotiate the Treaty of Amity and Commerce (Harris Treaty), between the United States and Japan, which was signed on the deck of the USS Powhatan in Tokyo Bay, on July 29, 1858
