Japanese troops bursting through the South Gate of Tianjin (Tientsin), China, July 13, 1900. They blew open the gate with explosives after one soldier sacrificed himself to keep a short fuse lit. The Battle of Tianjin, during the Boxer Rebellion rescued a besieged population of foreign nationals, and established a base for the advance on Beijing.
