Japanese troops bursting through the South Gate
Japanese troops bursting through the South Gate of Tianjin (Tientsin), China, July 13, 1900. They blew open the gate with explosives after one soldier sacrificed himself to keep a short fuse lit. The Battle of Tianjin, during the Boxer Rebellion rescued a besieged population of foreign nationals, and established a base for the advance on Beijing. The 1963 movie, 55 DAYS AT PEKING, was based on the war (BSLOC_2017_20_25)
