Jeff Davis imprisoned in a casement cell in Fortress Monroe on May 19, 1865. Initially, he was held for complicity in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. When this was not confirmed, he was indicted for treason, but never tried. Eventually, after 2 years in prison, he was transferred to civilian custody on May 13, 1867 and then released on bail
