Jefferson Davis was released from civilian custody on bail of $100, 000 in May 1867. The bond was signing by Cornelius Vanderbilt, Horace Greeley, and Gerrit Smith, the radical abolitionist. On December 25, 1868, President Andrew Johnsons issued his 4th Amnesty Proclamation, which absolved former Confederate President Jefferson Davis of any guilt for participation in the Civil War. This cleared Davis of the lingering treason charges
