John Jay was New York City lawyer in 1775, when the first battles of the American Revolution were fought. He joined the New York Committee of Correspondence, and was a delegate to the First Continential Congress. He advocated for ratification of the Federal Constitution with five essays in the Federalist Papers. Jay was a negotiator of the Treaty of Paris, 1783. In 1795, the treaty he negotiated with Britain was unpopular in US, but delayed war for several years
