John L. Burns, the old hero of Gettysburg
John L. Burns, the old hero of Gettysburg, sits in a rocking chair with his gun and crutches nearby. When he fought with the 150th Pennsylvania Volunteers as a sharpshooter, he shot charging Confederate officer from his horse. Burns was wounded, left on the field during a retreat, and attended to by Confederates, who believed his story that he was a civilian. Otherwise as a non-uniformed combatant, he could have been executed as a bushwhacker. He claimed to have walked with Lincoln in the Gettysburg procession of Nov. 19, 1863
