John Milton Chivington led a 700-man force of the Colorado Territory militia in the massacre at Sand Creek on Nov. 29, 1864. They murdered between 150 and 200 Indians nearly all women and children, prompting Native American retaliation and anti-military public opinion against a general war on Plains Indians
