John Surratt was suspected of involvement

John Surratt was suspected of involvement in the Lincoln assassination, but evaded capture by escaping to Canada, then to Europe and North Africa. He was arrested in Alexandria, Egypt, on Nov. 23, 1866, and brought back on a US Navy ship in early 1867. When tried in a US civilian court, the jury was deadlocked causing Surratts release in August 1867. In time he found a long term position as treasurer of the Baltimore Steam Packet Company, from which he retired in 1914
