John Trumbull, in self-portrait painted in
John Trumbull, in self-portrait painted in the 1800s. He came of age during the Revolutionary War. After short service in the Continental Army he went to England to study painting with Benjamin West. Upon his return to America in 1782, he began painting scenes and portraits of the American Revolution, for which he is best remembered. Four of his monumental paintings are installed in the US Capitol Rotunda
