John Winthrop was an early leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the second major settlement in New England. Two years after the colonys founding, Winthrop led the first large wave of immigrants from England in 1630. He also served as its first governor, and an office he held for 12 of the colonys first 20 years. He is remembered for his vision of the colony as a Puritan city upon a hill
