Juan Ponce de Leon led the first official European expedition to Florida in 1513 and served as Spanish governor of Puerto Rico. His first voyage to the New World was with Christopher Columbuss second expedition in 1493. His portrait is flanked by symbols of the native Americans and European explorers.
