Kady Brownell was the only female to receive discharge papers from the Union Army during the US Civil War. With the support of Rhode Island governor William Sprague, Colonel Ambrose Burnside appointed her Daughter of the Regiment and color bearer so she could be with her husband Robert Brownell in the 5th Rhode Island Infantry. After Robert was seriously wounded, Kady was discharged with her husband
