King Cetshwayo led the independent state of Zululand
King Cetshwayo led the independent state of Zululand during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. British demands for his disarmament started the war. At the legendary Battle of Isandlwana, Jan. 1879, Zulus crushed a British force, killing 1300. In July 1879 the British won the Battle of Ulundi and Cetshwayo was deposed and exiled.
