Ku Klux Klansman in robes, armed with two pistols
Ku Klux Klansman in robes, armed with two pistols and a sword, c. 1880-1905. Photo by Owen A. Kenefick, of Lawrence, Mass. The costume has dark coloring around the mask holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth, similar to Klan costumes illustrated in an 1868 Harpers Weekly. The tall, conical hat, with the skull and crossbones, was displayed in Klan outfits worn in the 1872 Memphis Mardi Gras parade (BSLOC_2017_20_69)
