Ladies dress reform meeting at Freeman Place Chapel, Boston, in 1874. Two women are presenting samples of comfortable womens undergarments to a female audience at a Dress Reform Convention. Fashion at the time, featured large crinolines, full heavy skirts, tiny waists laced into corsets, and cumbersome bustles. Undergarments such as those on display had some success since they could be worn+ without showing. But the great majority of urban women continued to wear constricting corsets in public until the early 20th century
