Large group of emancipated African Americans at a cotton gin on one of the Sea Islands in South Carolina, 1863-66. They were among the 10, 000 slaves liberated when the Union Army occupied the coastal South Carolina to support the blockade Charleston harbor. The cotton brought high prices for the Federal Government and paid the workers for their labor
