LET US HAVE PEACE was Ulysses Grants presidential campaign slogan. This image depicts President Grant and William Belknap, Secretary of War, great Red Cloud, Spotted Tail, and Swift Bear, in June 1870. The Native Americans sought to obtain protection from Euro-Americans taking gold, buffalos, and horses from their reservations. They also sought redress for government failure to meet Treaty of Laramie obligations of delivering supplies and funds on the agreed schedule
