lvarez Nunez Cabeca de Vaca was an aspiring Spanish conquistador, who became one of four survivors of the 1527 Narvaez expedition. During eight years of wandering from the Gulf of Mexico to US Southwest, he became a slave, trader, and faith healer to various Native American tribes before returning to Spanish civilization in Mexico in 1536. His 1542 account of his experience caused the Spanish government to moderate conquistador brutality and enslavement of indigenous peoples
