Dramatic portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau, a Louisiana-born Parisian socialite, was painted when Sargent was still in his 20s. When Sargent later sold the painting to the Metropolitan Museum, he asked the Museum not post the sitter?s name, hence the mysterious title (BSLOC_2017_9_42)
