Major General Benjamin Butler, served as a Union Army commander in the American Civil War, 1861-65. In 1861, he used his wealth and political contacts to be appointed Brigadier General of the Massachusetts Militia. He was a political general, without significant military experience, but made significant contributions, including the liberations of African American as contraband of war. Photo by Mathew Brady
