Major General Friedrich Wilhelm, aka Baron von Steuben, trained the Continential Army soldiers at Valley Forge in 1778. He stressed training in the use of their bayonets. He created the first manual for the Continential Army, entitled, U.S. Army: Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States
