Major General James Wilkinson, ca. 1820. He was Governor of the Louisiana Territory in 1805, which led to his involvement in Aaron Burrs Spanish land acquisition scheme. He double crossed Burr, informing President Jefferson of Burrs scheme to help Mexico overthrow Spanish colonial rule, in exchange for land in which to establish a personal empire. Earlier, while he enjoyed the trust of US Presidents, he was engaged in spying for the Spanish government
