Major General John Charles Fremont, Union
Major General John Charles Fremont, Union commander of Department of the West from July 1, 1861 to Nov. 2, 1861. While in Missouri, without consulting his superiors, Fremonts issued an emancipation edict freeing slaves in his district. This action threated Lincolns delicate Civil War negotiations to establish border states neutrality. Lincoln relieved Fremont of his command for insubordination. Photo by George Gardner Rockwood
