Major General Oliver Otis Howard, fought with the Union Army throughout the US Civil War. He lost his right arm in the Battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines in June 1862, and returned to combat in Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Western Theater. He is most remembered for his Reconstruction role as head of the Freedmens Bureau, the short name of the Armys Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, active from May 1865 to July 1874
