Major General Quincy Adams Gillmore was a Union Army engineer and artillery specialist during the US Civil War. He commanded the artillery that forced the surrender of Confederate Fort Pulaski, April 11, 1862. He led the land forces during the Charleston campaign of 1863, including two disastrous assaults on Fort Wagner. He engineered the Swamp Angel Battery, from which the Union shelled downtown Charleston and its civilian population
