In March 1870, Indiana Quaker school teacher, Anna M. Stanton, moved to South Carolina to teach in a freedmans school founded by Civil War nurse, Cornelia Hancock. She taught industrial training, including, sewing, knitting and basket making. She describes her experiences in My Autobiography, 1908, by Anna M. Stanto
