In March 1870, Indiana Quaker school teacher, Anna M. Stanton, moved to South Carolina to teach in a freedmans school founded by Civil War nurse, Cornelia Hancock. She taught industrial training, including, sewing, knitting and basket making. She describes her experiences in My Autobiography, 1908
