Marcus Mosiah Garvey, born in Jamaica in 1887

Marcus Mosiah Garvey, born in Jamaica in 1887, was educated in London 1912-1915. In 1917 he moved to the US, where he established the Universal Negro Improvement Association chapter (UNIA) in Harlem and published a newspaper, NEGRO WORLD (1917-1933). Reaching a circulation of 200, 000, it served as a platform for Garveys Pan-Africanism. His movement was successful until financial ineptitude lead to his conviction for federal mail fraud in 1923, followed by imprisonment and deportation to Jamaica in 1927.
