The Maris des Cygnes Massacre, Kansas, May 19, 1858. About 30 Missouri ~border ruffians led by Charles Hamilton, a Georgian native and proslavery leader, captured 11 Kansas Free-Staters, five of whom they shot to death. Hamilton ordered the killing and fired the first bullet, but was never brought to justice. William Griffith was prosecuted and hung in 1863
