Marriage portraits of Lucas de Clercq
Marriage portraits of Lucas de Clercq, and Feyntje van Steenkiste, by Frans Hals, 1635, Dutch painting, oil on canvas. The informal portrait of the merchant Lucas de Clercq, contrasts with the conventionally posed portrait of his wife. Such separate portraits customarily depicted the husband on the left and the wife on the right, both turned towards each other. The light almost always came from the left, illuminating the face of the woman evenly, and casting striking shadows on that of the man (BSLOC_2016_3_72)
