Mary Ann Ball Bickerdyke was a Quaker, US Civil War nurse, hospital administrator, agent for the U. S. Sanitary Commission (USSC). She cared for wounded soldiers on nineteen battlefields, including Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Atlanta. In her role in the USSC, she traveled to inspect and improve Union hospitals
