Mary Brice was an African American woman enslaved on the Point of Honor estate in Lynchburg, VA. When the photo was made in 1853, Point of Honor was owned by judge William Daniel, Jr. who served on the Virginia Court of Appeals from 1846 through the end of the Civil War. The daguerreotype portrait was created by Peter E. Gibbs of Lynchburg
