MASSACRE AT JAMESTOWN, VIRGINIA, March 22, 1622. Opechancanough, Powhatans brother, succeeded him as paramount chief. The attack on Jamestown, was one of 24 coordinated attacks that killed 347 English men and women, one third of the colonist population, and began the Second Anglo-Powhatan War (1622-1632). The colonists retaliated with a war of extermination, despoiling Indian villages and crops. In the final peace of 1632, colonists won extensive land, expanding their settlement inland. By 1644 when a second such attack was made, killing 400 colonists, the population of 10, 000 Europeans again destroyed Indians towns, pushing them into the wilderness
