Mechanical cotton picker developed in 1936. Machine harvesters transformed cotton agriculture after introduction the 1930s. The old sharecropping and hand labor system was replaced by highly capitalized intensive agriculture. Before these machines, the need for low cost harvesting labor, caused landowners to coerce poor blacks and whites to remain indebted and trapped in sharecropping poverty. (CSU_2015_7_414)
