Meeting of the National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, c. 1873. The organizations mission was and still is, to promote the economic and political well-being of the community and agriculture. At its beginning, the Grange adopted some of the regalia and rituals of masonic groups. But its core purpose fighting the economic strangulation of farmers by the railroads, which had a monopoly on the transport of their products to urban markets
