MEN OF PROGRESS, by Christian Schussele, 1862. This group portrait of nineteen American inventors and innovators was composed from separate portraits copied by Schussele, for this large, ambitious painting. While all those portrayed were still alive in 1862, they never posed as a group. Among those depicted are Samuel Colt, Cyrus McCormick, Charles Goodyear, John Ericsson, Samuel Morse, and Elias Howe. On the table is Morses telegraph recorder. On the floor are a model of McCormicks reaper (left), and an high precision metal machine (right). A portrait of Benjamin Franklin hangs at left
