Mexican American War. Battle of Buena Vista, Feb. 22-23, 1847. The battle was a near thing, with the US army about a quarter of the size of the Mexicans 20, 000 men. However, the US artillerys superior range and high explosive ammunition was a significant advantage. The US rifles were more accurate and could be fired more frequently than the Mexicans
