Mexican American War. Battle of Buena Vista, Feb. 22-23, 1847. The exhausted Mexican army silently evacuated the Buena Vista battlefield on the night of Feb. 23-24, leaving the field and victory to the US. It was a very close fight, and possibly he could have won in a second days fight since the Americans were also worn out. When Santa Anna reached his headquarters at San Luis Potosi, he displayed captured US battle flags and captured cannons as proof of his victory
