Mexican American War. Battle of Cerro Gordo
Mexican American War. Battle of Cerro Gordo, April 12-18, 1847. On April 8 the US Army of 14, 000 marched inland toward Mexico City on the National Road. About 50 miles from Vera Cruz it was halted by a Mexican Army of 8, 700 positioned above the pass at Cerro Gordo. Rather than attacking frontally, the US engineers, which included staff officers, Robert E. Lee, P.G.T. Beauregard, and George McClellan, discovered and engineered a pathway to position the US army to outflank the Mexican defenses. On April 18, Santa Annas forces were dislodged, with 1, 000 casualties and 3, 000 prisoners taken. US losses were 425 casualties
