Mexican American War. Battle of Cerro Gordo, April 12-18, 1847. After losing the battle, Mexican General Santa Anna was caught off guard by the Fourth Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and escaped on a mule, leaving his carriage and artificial leg behind. It was captured by US forces and is still on display at the Illinois State Military Museum, Springfield, Illinois
