Mexican American War. Battle of Chapultepec, Sept. 12-13, 1847. Americans shelled the fortress all day on September 12, 1847. At dawn on the 13th, Scott sent two different storming parties of 250 men each, led by Gideon Pillow and John Quitman, to fight their way to the base of the castle, then scale the walls with ladders, and take the fort in hand-to-hand fighting
