Mexican American War. Battle of Contreras, August 20, 1847. The US Army of 10, 000 approached Mexico City on a route through rough land south of the city. Santa Anna spread his army of 25, 000 around the city to engage the invaders. A major battle began at Contreras on August 19. When it continued into the next day, according to the convention of the time, it became named the Battle of Churubusco
