Mexican American War. Gen. Winfield Scotts triumphal entry into Mexico City, on the morning of Sept. 14, 1847. Scott is seated on horseback, leading triumphant American troops into the central square of Mexico City. On the previous day, defeated Mexican Gen. Santa Anna evacuated his remaining army of 9, 000 to Guadalupe Hidalgo, north of the city. At dawn, after the city government surrendered, the US flag was raised in the city center. With that, the stage was set for General Scotts arrival at the Zocalo, with the army in parade formation
