This military railroad bridge across Potomac

This military railroad bridge across Potomac Creek was rebuilt in May in 1862. In only nine days, regular Union army soldiers cut and hauled the wood, assembled the bridge supports, and laid the rails. The project was led by Chief Railroad Engineer, Col. Herman Haupt. Jokingly, Lincoln described it as there is nothing in it but cornstalks and beanpoles. Retreating Confederate forces had destroyed the previous bridge as they retreated to Fredericksburg
