In the decade of the 1870s, Kansas gained nearly 27, 000 black residents and 6, 000 in 1879 alone. After 1879, the emigrations subsided, partly due to intimidation by southern whites who feared to lose the cheap labor of an oppressed underclass. Also, southern steamboats were coerced to deny freed people passage on the riverboats
