Moctezuma II, holds a scepter while standing on a reed mat and next to a basket-work throne. He wears a beard, and single epaulette of quetzal feathers. He was the ninth Aztec emperor, reigning from 1502-1520. The image is from the Ramgrez Codex (Tovar manuscript) based on an earlier work possibly compiled by Christianized Aztecs shortly after the conquest
