Modern reconstruction at the Fort Necessity
Modern reconstruction at the Fort Necessity National Battlefield in southwestern Pennsylvania. The original fort was built under the command of Major George Washington of the Virginia Militia. It was placed and constructed quickly and badly, in May 1754, on Great Meadows. The opening battle of the French and Indian War, on July 3, 1854, resulted in the defeat of the 393 British colonial soldiers in the Fort, against 700 French and Indian fighters. The British and Virginia Militia casualties were 91, against 22 for the French and Indian attackers
