Muster of the 409 foreign legation guards in Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion, June 1900. On May 28, 1900, the marines were summoned by Col. Claude MacDonald from foreign fleets near Northern China. With reluctant approval from the Chinese, they traveled by train from Tianjin to Beijing. Leading the 300 legation civilian men, they defended the foreign civilians and Chinese Christian refugees in the Boxer-Chinese assault from June 20th to August 15th.
