Nat Turner meeting with African American co-conspirators in the woods at night. They fomented a violent revolt of more than 70 slaves and free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia on Aug. 21, 1831. They killed sixty whites, and when the revolt failed, the state executed 56 blacks, while angry white mobs killed another estimated 200 with impunity
