National Cemetery at Andersonville, Georgia in photo taken between 1864-1870. Under difficult conditions, Union soldiers recorded the names of the dead and their burial locations. After the US Civil war, The Missing Soldiers Office received 60, 000 letters from relatives searching for missing soldier. When Office closed in 1867, Clara Barton and her staff had identified more than 20, 000 missing soldiers, of which nearly 13, 000 had died at Andersonville Prison
